Meet Dr. Catherine Baase ('77)

A globally recognized leader in occupational health, epidemiology, and health promotions, and who was recognized as the 2010 outstanding alumna for the College of Science, Engineering & Technology.

In February 2011, Dr. Baase participated in a panel discussion, "From SVSU Student to CEO." Hear how about her experience at SVSU and how it helped her get to where she is today.


Dr. Catherine Baase graduated from SVSU in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Dr. Baase is the Global Director of Health Services for The Dow Chemical Company, with direct responsibility for leadership and management of all Occupational Health, Epidemiology, and Health Promotion programs and staff around the world.  In addition to these roles, Dr. Baase drives the Dow Health Strategy for employees, retirees, and their families. She is also involved with health policy and issues management. Previously, Dr. Baase served as director of Health Care Strategic Planning with direct responsibility for Dow’s U.S. health benefit plans.

In combination with her role at Dow, Dr. Baase is active in a number of associations. She chairs the Board of Directors of the Michigan Health Information Alliance (MIHIA). She serves as an officer and is on the Board of Directors for the Partnership for Prevention , an organization dedicated to advancing policies and practices that make disease prevention a national priority. Dr. Baase also serves on the Board of Directors of the PCPCC, Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative , a national coalition formed to establish advanced, highly effective primary care. She is a Fellow in the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Baase serves on the editorial staff for both the American Journal of Health Promotion . She has published on a variety of health topics and is frequently called upon to speak and participate in premier conferences.

Her past experiences include a two-year term on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports – a committee comprised of 20 volunteers who advise the President through the Secretary of Health and Human Services. She also recently served on the Partners Task Force on Objectives, established by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention to help oversee a process for gathering and applying public and key organization input from across the nation.

Dr. Baase has been board certified in Family Practice since completing her residency at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals where she served as chief resident. Dr. Baase is married, resides in Saginaw, and has four grown children and five grandchildren.
