The graduation application is now posted online. Students can fill out the application by going to the Commencement website and clicking on the blue "Apply Now" button. Or by selecting Find on the SVSU homepage and selecting "Commencement".
As soon as you submit the graduation application, you must go to my.svsu.edu to pay the $85.00 graduation fee. If you do not pay the fee, the Registrar's Office cannot begin to process the application.
Once the application has been processed a degree audit is conducted to determine if all requirements have been met. If a degree audit indicates that a student candidate is not ready to graduate, the application is made inactive and the student is notified in writing to this effect. Also, any late applications or missing documentation might cause the candidate to be moved to a later graduation date.
Note: The graduation fee is set by the University's Board of Control.
Most Faculty-Led Study Abroad program are offered during the summer. They are also often taken by students who are nearing graduation.
When a student applies to graduate online at the Office of the Registrar’s website and pays the $85 fee (also online), s/he must select a target graduation date (this is separate from the Commencement ceremony). If the Study Abroad is scheduled to go beyond the graduation date, the student will not be able to graduate. Therefore, two options are available if a student initially wanted to graduate in May, but enrolls in a subsequent Faculty-Led Study Abroad program:
Postpone the graduate date to August and then work with the Study Abroad Office to register. The postponement can be done in the Office of the Registrar.
It is important to note that if the student meets the criteria listed on the Office of the Registrar’s website, s/he will be permitted to “walk early” in the Commencement ceremony, before all degree requirements have been met. In this case, if the student qualifies, then s/he would participate in the may Commencement ceremony, take the Faculty-Led Study Abroad, and then actually graduate in the Office of the Registrar in August.
Graduate before registering for the Faculty-Led Study Abroad program, then go to the Admissions Office and get admitted as a Non-Degree Guest or Non-Degree Post-Baccalaureate student, and thereafter, register for the Faculty-Led Study Abroad program. This is a viable option as long as the Study Abroad program does not need to be counted as credits toward the Bachelor’s degree.
To qualify for Latin Honors, an undergraduate degree recipient must complete 62 credits and achieve a grade-point average within the GPA categories listed below. The Latin Honors policy was ratified by the faculty and grade point averages are not rounded up as a matter of policy. Prior semester GPA and completed credits will be used for the purpose of the Commencement Program and honor cords, as this Program must be prepared prior to the end of the student's final semester.
If the student meets the GPA requirement for one of the three Latin Honor designations but does not have the 62 earned SVSU credits at the time of the request, Latin Honors will still be granted for the Commencement program/booklet and honors cords if the student can reasonably be expected to have earned 62 credits by the intended graduation based on the credit hours for which s/he is already registered at the time of the request.
*Please Note: The actual honors designation on the official transcript and diploma will solely reflect the cumulative GPA at the time of graduation (not Commencement) and only if the student has earned 62 SVSU credits pursuant to the University Catalog.
*Latin Honors is only conferred to undergraduate students.
Commencement is the ceremony signifying graduation, in which participants will walk across the stage to receive their diploma cover and a letter of congratulations.
Graduation is when the degree audits have been reviewed (multiple times) and have been approved. The final review takes place after all grades have been received in the student's last semester. Final approval of the degree audit is issued by the Registrar's Office.
Throughout the year, at the end of the Fall semester (December Commencement), at the end of the Winter semester (May Commencement), and at the end of the Summer semester (August).
There is no Summer/August Commencement Ceremony. Since there is no August ceremony, students can email a request to "walk early", before they complete their degree programs by sending an email to the Registrar, Dr. Cliff Dorne, firstname.lastname@example.org. In order to grant the student permission to "walk early" they must meet the criteria posted on the Registrar's website.
Caps and gowns can be picked up from the SVSU Bookstore. If you cannot make it to the Grad Fair, you are still able to pick up the cap and gown during regular business hours. Students are encouraged to check their SVSU emails regularly to stay updated on all important information regarding Commencement.
If you have any further questions about caps and gowns please call the SVSU Bookstore at 989-964-4277.
If you live within the postal address of Saginaw, Bay and Midland, your diploma will be held at the Office of the Registrar. A notification letter will be mailed when the diploma is ready to be picked up. Some form of picture identification is needed to receive the materials.
If the you need the diploma to be mailed or picked up by another individual, please complete the bottom section of the notification letter, sign it, and return the letter to the Office of the Registrar via mail, fax or scanned into an email directed to email@example.com. Please state the individual's full name and have them bring a form of official identification to verify that the graduate has given them permission to pick up the diploma.
If you do not live in the postal addresses of Saginaw, Bay and Midland, your diploma will automatically be mailed out to the address they provided on the graduation application.
You can buy a replacement diploma or diploma cover at any time. It is important to note that SVSU can only duplicate diplomas for Winter 1988 semester graduates and on, otherwise a special order will need to be placed.
The cost of replacement for a diploma is $12.00, a replacement diploma cover is $18.00, and a replacement diploma and cover is $30.00. Please fill out the Diploma/Cover Replacement Form (144kB) to start the replacement process.
This will occur if the degree audit was reviewed and deemed incomplete, or if there are any obligations/outstanding financial balances on your account (e.g. overdue library book, parking ticket, unresolved conduct issue, etc.).
Please call the Registrar Office for more information at (989) 964-4085.
Note: Regarding incomplete degree audits, the Registrar will send an email detailing the academic requirements that need to be met.
