Crypt of St. Mary's Chapel (Lady Chapel), which dates from 1186 C.E. Erected after an earlier church was destroyed by fire. Below and to the rear, shrine dedicated by Abbot Beere to St. Joseph of Arimathea. In 1539, Glastonbury Abbey was dissolved by King Henry VIII, and over the years quarried for its stone. In 1908, the Church of England acquired the site and moved to preserve what was left. (See Geoffrey Ashe. "Glastonbury, Somerset." A Guidebook to Arthurian Britain. Longman, 1980; Wellingborough, Northamptonshire: Aquarian Press, 1983. 109-120.) |
