By the end of this course students will:

1.  learn the rules of pronunciation in French systematically.

        a. transcription into International Phonetic Alphabet

        b. imitation of recorded intonation and stress patterns

2.  associate the correct sound with the spelling of words.

3.  learn the mouth positions for the production of French sounds.

4.  improve listening comprehension.

Regular attendance is required and more than two absences will result in a penalty (points deducted from your class average). Homework will be collected periodically.

Grades will be determined in the following way:

•    Homework and quizzes         30 per cent (no make-ups) The lowest score will be dropped if all are taken.

•    Midterm and final                 50 per cent

•    Pronunciation (based on       20 per cent

                                                   (Based on progress during semester)

How to study for this class:

1.   Come to class regularly.

2.   Practice out loud with the CD’s as much as you can. Listen for SOUNDS, intonation patterns, stress, phrasing. Try to imitate these to the best of your ability.

3.   Memorize the rules and practice applying them in the homework. Keep up with each class.

4.   Read aloud the sentences in the homework assignments as you are doing them.

5.   When transcribing from French to the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), use the spelling of the word to determine which symbols to use. Note: sounding out the words may cause confusion since several symbols may be quite similar in sound.

Phrase 2: Ecrivez p. 12 exercice écrit et p. 13 ex. 3-4. Ecoutez le CD 1 et répétez à haute voix. Apprenez les symboles de l’alphabet phonétique.

le 9 sept.            Chapitre 1: Phrase 3 . Ecrivez p. 15 exercice écrit et p. 16 ex. 3,4.

                          Phrase 4: Ecrivez p. 18 exercice écrit et p. 19 exercice écrit et oral.

                          Ecoutez le CD 1 et répétez à haute voix.  

le 16 sept.          Chapitre 2: La prosodie: la syllabation, l’enchaînement, l’accentuation, l’accent tonique. Ecrivez pp. 35-36 exercices écrits et oraux 1 et 2. Ecoutez le CD 1 et répétez à haute voix.

le 23 sept.          Chapitre 2: La Liaison. Apprenez les règles. Ecrivez pp. 49-50, ex. 1, 2. Ecoutez le CD et répétez à haute voix.  

le 30 sept.          Chapitre 3: Les voyelles /i/, le /e/ et le /ɛ/ et le /a/. Ecrivez p. 70 exercice écrit, p. 71 exercice oral et écrit, p. 83 exercice écrit et p. 84-85 ex. écrit. Ecoutez le CD et répétez à haute voix.

le 7 oct.             Chapitre 3: les voyelles /y/ /ф/ et /œ/. Ecrivez p. 91 exercice écrit et p. 94, ex. 2, p. 103, et p.104. exercice. écrit .Ecoutez le CD et répétez à haute voix.  

le 14 oct.           Chapitre 3: les voyelles /u/ /o/ et /ɔ/. Ecrivez p. 113 ex. 2, p. 122, exercice écrit, etp. 123 exercice écrit. Ecoutez le CD et répétez à haute voix.  

le 21 oct.           Chapitre 4: les voyelles nasales /ɑ/ /ɛ/ /ɔ/ et /œ/. Ecrivez p. 136 ex. 1 et 2, p. 142 ex. 1 et 2, p. 147 exercice écrit et p. 151 ex. 1 et 2. Ecoutez le CD et répétez à haute voix.
