CWC Outreach Projects

Because we believe good writing happens inside the community, the Community Writing Centers collaborate with community organizations to provide on-site workshops for community residents, along with events for the community that focus on writing.

Some of these workshops and events are listed below:

"Postcards to the Future Michigan Governor" 2018

During October 2018 the community writing centers, in conjunction with SVSU and the YWCA, sponsored a "Dear Future Michigan Governor" postcard campaign. Any Michigan resident was invited to use a pre-made postcard to share their thoughts, hopes, and/or concerns with the future governor of our state. Over 3,000 postcards were also distributed to 18 different school districts in Michigan. These postcards were collected and mailed to the incoming governor in January.

This workshop focused on personal writing and poetry, encouraging the participants to use creative writing as a form of self-expression. This program was sponsored by the Saginaw chapter of My Brother's Keeper.

"Postcards to the Future President" 2016

During October 2016, the SCWC sponsored a "Dear Future President" postcard campaign. Any member of the Saginaw community was invited to use a pre-made postcard to share their thoughts, hopes, and/or concerns with the future leader of our country. These postcards were collected by October 31 and mailed to the White House on  January 11, Inauguration Day. Over 200 postcards were mailed from residents in the Saginaw community.
