As an art form, the still life takes familiar objects and helps us see them in a new way. Poetry, whether the focus is objects, places, or relationships, does the same thing. Our community literary journal Still Life works hard to give a voice to local writers—of all ages—who help us see the world with new eyes. As Steve Parks says, "Community publications, at their best, speak to what the community values most." Here at the Center for Community Writing, we value our writers' vision of themselves and the world around them.
An annual publication, Still Life is open to all Saginaw and Bay County residents, and to all visitors to the Saginaw Community Writing Center or Bay Community Writing Center. Our submission deadline is July 15 of every year, but we accept submissions year-round. Still Life’s primary focus is on poetry, but we are working to include contests in various genres, so be sure to check back here regularly.
The inaugural issue of Still Life was released in January 2018 and grant-funded by SVSU’s Center of Academic Innovation. Still Life is now funded through the generosity of Saginaw community member Dr. Debasish Mridha.
